TWENTY-FIVE

Friday, December 28th, 2018

You could tell a lot about a place by how the elevator smelled, and this one had a fresh rubber scent. Not a trace of urine I could detect. The body odor was, I suspected, from the cluster of tech bros that had filled the space, and it forced Ben and me to squeeze in shoulder to shoulder in the back corner.

By the time we hit the top floor, we had the elevator to ourselves again.

“What do you think one of these units costs?” Ben asked as we walked the long hallway, looking for G11.

“Downtown Austin? No less than $350,000. Depends on the size, though. Hard to tell from out here.”

“When I bought my house in Buda ten years ago, it cost $170,000. Guarantee it’s at least twice the size of anything here.”

It was a natural conversation in Austin, with housing costs soaring to comical heights, but we had another reason for discussing it. We were both trying to wrap our heads around how much money the Weiss family had.

Ben spotted G11 first, and Garrett “G-Dawg” Weiss took his sweet time answering the door. “So nice to meet you, detectives. Bless you for what you do. Come on in.”

I checked my watch. It was ten fifteen in the morning on the dot.

As soon as I got a look at his place, my cost estimate more than doubled. It was an open floor plan penthouse unit with a wall of windows overlooking downtown and Lady Bird Lake. Of the space I could see, there was likely close to two thousand square feet, and there had to be at least one bedroom and bathroom somewhere.

This was tech rich, not church rich. Or at least it shouldn’t be.

“What do you think?” he said, holding his arms out as he led us toward a cluster of leather furniture facing the windows.

Ben and I shared a quick look. “Um, it’s nice,” Ben said.

I was too busy eyeing the glass gun case to respond. The thing took up an entire wall and was clearly custom-made, with blue LEDs illuminating dozens of high-powered weapons. A quick count tallied eight rows of four—thirty-two of them—most of them long guns, but a row in the middle displayed a few high-ticket pistols. I had a feeling many weren’t legal to own, which was a hard line to cross in Texas.

“G-Dawg” flopped onto one of the leather couches, kicking up his bare feet to stretch across the entire length. “Have a seat.” As soon as we did, he started in. “You know, I strongly back the blue.”

As subtly as I could, I checked the time on my watch. Ten sixteen. Less than five minutes before Garrett dropped the slogan. Ben owed me lunch.

I jabbed my partner in the side of the thigh, and he pretended not to notice, but I know he did. I was thinking barbecue.

Ben said, “We appreciate your support.”

“So, like, I’ll be honest with you, bro.” Garrett placed a hand over his heart. “I’m, like, not real sure why you’re here.
